Gran Canaria completed their backcourt on Tuesday by signing Uruguayan guard Joaquín Rodríguez, a player labeled as “unpredictable” and their fourth official addition ahead of the 2026-27 season. Born in Soriano (Uruguay, 1999), Rodríguez arrives after averaging 8.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 34 Liga Endesa games for Casademont Zaragoza last season. A full Uruguayan international, he began his career at Club Atlético Aguada and Larre Borges before moving to Argentina in 2018 with Estudiantes Concordia, where he posted 7.8 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game in his debut season. His breakthrough came at Obras Sanitarias. Between 2019 and 2023, the guard played four seasons with the Buenos Aires side, peaking in 2021/22 with 15.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per contest. That year he led the LNB in steals, cementing his reputation as one of Argentina’s most disruptive perimeter defenders. After leaving Obras, Rodríguez played for Peñarol and Peñarol Mar del Plata before a brief return to Obras and a move to Betis in LEB Oro, where he averaged 13.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 2023/24. His Liga Endesa stint with Zaragoza in 2024/25 saw him log 34 games with 8.3 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists. In February 2025 he was loaned to Movistar Estudiantes, finishing that campaign at 11.4 points, 2.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Now, Dreamland Gran Canaria will pair him with Marques Townes under the club’s new coaching staff. Rodríguez arrives as a versatile scorer who can hit threes or attack the rim, with European experience that makes him an intriguing Liga Endesa prospect.
